Penelope Barker organized the famous Edenton Tea Party on October 25, 1774. She convinced 50 women to sign their names to a petition to stop drinking tea and buying English cloth. The petition shocked the British and London magazines labeled the Edenton women “uncontrollable.”
Although there was no dumping of tea into Edenton Bay, the petition was nothing less than a bold display of patriotism and love of liberty. This rebellious event took place less than a year following the more famous Boston Tea Party.
