This fast-steeping black tea from the organic Dinjoye Gardens in the Assam region of India is known around the world for its full-bodied flavor that combines well with milk. This grade is found in a host of English and Irish morning tea blends. Think of it as comfort food!

CTC stands for Cut-Tear-Curl, a process invented by the English when they established many of gardens in India and Sri Lanka. The tea leaves are put through a Rotorvane machine (see Bruce Richardson's photo), which eviscerates the leaves. This makes a finished tea that is concentrated into tiny pellets. This ensures a fast steep and bold cup of tea that is filled with tasty tannins that love to bind with milk.

Makes a great base for Chai!

Rich and Deep

This organic Assam CTC is amazing. I've been purchasing cheap Assam CTC from local Indian groceries for years. This tea is so much more rich and fresh than anything I've purchased before. The depth of flavor and lack of bitterness (CTC processing always makes for a very strong tea, but the cheap stuff was kind of acrid) surprised me. I am grateful to have found Ellwood's tea and will be using it to make my homemade masala chai mix from now on.

Quick, robust, but not bitter black Assam

This is the tea I use most mornings. It's easy to measure and brews fast, but has good, dark, not bitter, rich Assam flavor. I use it straight, but others say milk is just grand in it. (I'll have to try!)

Superb Quality

I make my own masala chai blends at home and was frequently disappointed by the quality (old, dry, dusty) of most CTC tea available here in the US. I discovered this CTC Assam from Elmwood and have been thoroughly impressed by its quality, strength, and flavor. The bulk bags are thick and keep the tea fresh until I'm ready to crack into them. This is now the only base tea that I buy for my homemade chai.
